1953 was a year of the 20th century according to the Gregorian calendar. It was not a leap year, meaning it had 365 days. It fell during the early period of the Cold War, in which the United States and the Soviet Union competed for political and military power.
The year is remembered for significant political transitions in major countries and the end of a major war in Asia. It is also associated with scientific advances that had profound effects on biology.
Political transitions
In March 1953, Joseph Stalin, the long-time leader of the Soviet Union, died. His death opened a period known as the succession struggle within the Communist Party, which ultimately led to Nikita Khrushchev's rise to power. The same year, Dwight D. Eisenhower took office as President of the United States, following the 1952 election.
The Korean War
In July 1953, an armistice agreement ending the Korean War, which had begun in 1950, was signed. The agreement was not a complete peace: the two Koreas remained divided, with the border established along a demilitarized zone. A formal peace treaty has never been reached to this day.
Science and research
That year, James Watson and Francis Crick published the structure of DNA's double helix, building on X-ray data from Rosalind Franklin and Maurice Wilkins. The publication became the foundation of molecular biology. The same year, a team led by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay were the first confirmed to reach the summit of Mount Everest.
