The Iraq War

In March 2003, a military coalition led by the United States and including the United Kingdom launched military action against Iraq under the leadership of Saddam Hussein. Within a short period, the Iraqi government collapsed, followed by a long period of occupation and political upheaval. The operation was preceded by international controversy, particularly over the question of weapons of mass destruction that Iraq was claimed to possess.

SARS

In 2003, SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome)—a viral respiratory disease—spread from Asia to other countries. The World Health Organization issued travel warnings and health advisories. Governments relied on quarantine measures and contact tracing of patients.

Science and space

In February 2003, the Space Shuttle Columbia broke apart upon re-entry into the atmosphere, leading the United States space shuttle program to be suspended for an extended period for investigation. That year also marked the completion of work on the Human Genome Project.
