2006 was a year within the Gregorian calendar system, the most widely used chronological system in the world. It began on a Sunday and was a common year of 365 days, not a leap year.
The year saw political and economic shifts in various regions, as well as international events notable at the global level, including major sporting competitions.
Somalia and the Horn of Africa
That year southern Somalia experienced a significant change of power: the Islamic Courts took control of Mogadishu and parts of the central regions following armed conflict with militant groups. By late in the year, Ethiopian forces supporting the transitional federal government intervened to remove the Islamic Courts from the major cities.
Global Events
The FIFA World Cup was held in Germany, where Italy won the tournament. Other global matters that year included developments related to North Korea's nuclear program and a conflict that broke out in the Middle East in the summer.
Science and Technology
That year the International Astronomical Union (IAU) defined the term 'planet', which resulted in Pluto being reclassified as a 'dwarf planet'. Additionally, new social internet services expanded in use, and new manufacturing equipment and games entered the market.
