An arid region is a land area with very little rainfall, where water loss through evaporation and transpiration far exceeds incoming water. The defining characteristic of aridity is not heat alone, but dryness: incoming water is less than outgoing water, which constrains the types of plants and animals that can survive there. Climate scientists typically define aridity by an annual rainfall threshold below 250 millimetres, though this measure varies depending on the classification system used.

Arid regions occur on all continents and consist of sand, rock, gravel, and even snow. They make up a substantial portion of the world's dry land, home to large populations who depend on groundwater, seasonal watercourses, and intermittent rainfall.

Formation of Arid Regions

Several factors produce persistent aridity. One is global air circulation: warm air rising from the equator deposits its moisture there, then descends around the 30th parallel north and south as dry air, creating the world's major desert belts. Another is rain shadow effect: mountains block moisture-bearing winds, leaving the leeward side dry. Additionally, cold ocean currents near coastlines reduce cloud formation, while areas far from the sea receive little rain.

Landscape Features

With sparse vegetation, wind and sudden rains actively reshape the land surface. Wind carries sand and creates dunes and exposed rocky surfaces from which loose material has been stripped. Heavy seasonal rains create flash floods that rapidly fill drainage channels. Temperature swings between day and night are extreme, since there is no cloud cover or vegetation to moderate heat.

Adapted Life

Plants in arid regions have water-conservation mechanisms: deep root systems, small leaves or none at all, and water-storing tissues like those of cacti. Some animals shelter underground during the day and emerge at night. Camels, certain gazelles, and some insects can survive on little water, obtaining it from food or reducing water loss through their bodies.

People and Economy

Inhabitants of arid lands often depend on nomadic pastoralism, trade along arid routes, and agriculture tied to wells and seasonal watercourses. Recently, groundwater extraction, oil and mineral resources, and solar power projects have become economically significant. The sustainability of arid regions depends on balancing climate variability, extreme scarcity, and water use.
