An astronomer is a scientist specializing in astronomy, the study of celestial objects and phenomena—stars, planets, moons, galaxies, and events occurring in space. The work involves observation, calculation, and the construction of mathematical models to explain how these objects behave.
Today, most astronomers work as researchers at universities, research institutes, or government space agencies. They are expected to have advanced training in physics and mathematics. Consequently, the terms 'astronomer' and 'astrophysicist' are often used interchangeably in modern usage.
Work and methods
The work divides into two interconnected aspects. On the observational side, astronomers use telescopes on the ground or in space, collecting light, radio waves, or other forms of radiation. On the theoretical and computational side, they build computer models to simulate how stars form or how the universe expands. Many astronomers do not work with telescopes directly; data is sent to computers, and much of their work consists of data analysis.
Specializations
The field has several branches: planetary astronomy, stellar astronomy, galactic astronomy, and cosmology, which studies the overall history and structure of the universe. There is also specialization by wavelength observed, such as radio astronomy, infrared astronomy, or X-ray astronomy.
History
Before the modern era, astronomers worked with the naked eye, recording the motion of planets and the positions of stars. Medieval, Greek, Chinese, and Indian scholars built observatories and created star catalogues used for centuries. The introduction of the telescope in the 17th century, and subsequently photography and spectroscopy, transformed the methods of work.
