A bed is a piece of household furniture designed for a person to lie on, sleep, or rest. It typically consists of a frame, either wooden or metal, standing on legs, with a mattress placed on top. Beds are covered with sheets, blankets, and pillows.

Beds are found worldwide across different cultures, though their design varies. Some are elevated structures with legs, while others are mattresses placed directly on the floor and put away during the day. Sizes are generally standardized as single beds for one person and double beds for two people.

Parts of a bed

The frame of a bed is typically made from wood, metal, or a combination of materials. It includes slats or webbing that support the mattress. The headboard and footboard are optional components that serve both decorative and supportive purposes. The mattress can be filled with wool, down, foam, air, or metal springs.

Types

There are many types: standard beds, bunk beds that save space, folding beds, and inflatable air beds used for travel. Hospital beds in medical facilities have sections that can be raised and lowered to aid in patient care. Small children's beds are made with guardrails to prevent falls.

Brief history

For a long time, humans used piles of grass, animal skins, or layered cloth for sleeping. Elevating beds off the ground helped protect against dampness, insects, and pests. In some cultures, particularly in East Asia, it was common to sleep on mats placed on the floor and stored away during the day, allowing the room to be used for other purposes.

UncertaintyThe precise dates of introduction of specific bed types and official size standards vary by country; specific figures are not provided here.
