Camera obscura is a term applied to a device or box-shaped structure associated with image capture or display of images. The word is used in various ways: sometimes it refers to an early camera whose form was that of a box, and sometimes it refers to a box in which printed photographs or film are stored.
The precise meaning depends on the context in which the term is used. When discussing the history of photography, it refers to the simplest device for producing an image: a darkened box with a small aperture and a back surface on which the image appears.
Operating principle of the camera obscura
The simplest type, called the camera obscura, works by means of light entering through a small aperture. When light from an external object passes through the aperture, it produces an inverted image (upside down and left-right reversed) on the opposite side. If the aperture is replaced with a lens (optical lens), the image becomes sharper.
To capture the image, the back surface is fitted with something that responds to light—historically, photographic film or chemically treated paper, or in modern times, an electronic sensor. The duration for which the aperture remains open (the exposure time) determines how much light reaches the surface.
Educational use
Handmade camera obscuras are commonly used in teaching the physics of light. Students can construct a simple darkened box with an aperture (a pinhole camera) and observe directly how the image becomes inverted. The experiment demonstrates the relationship between the size of the aperture, the sharpness of the image, and its brightness.
Other meanings
The term is also used to refer to a storage box in which a family keeps photographs, or a display structure for showing images. This type of use has no connection to optical technology; it simply denotes a container.
