The cat is a carnivorous mammal belonging to the family Felidae. Its body is characterized by a highly flexible spine, muscles that contract rapidly, and short but powerful legs. This combination enables it to move with precision, cover long distances in bounds, and change direction quickly.

Cat movement relies on an integrated system: the eyes, the inner ear (the balance center), and sensory receptors in the muscles that signal the body's position to the brain. The brain processes this information to coordinate jumping and landing.

Righting reflex during falls

When a cat falls, it typically rotates to land on its feet. The sequence works as follows: the inner ear senses the direction of the fall; the cat twists its body, and then rotates the front and rear halves in opposite directions. Because the spine is flexible, rotating these two different sections is possible. This reflex does not guarantee injury-free landing—falls from sufficient heights can still cause harm.
