A cell site is a fixed location where antennas and radio equipment are installed to connect mobile phones and communications networks. Each site provides service to a defined geographic area called a cell. Adjacent cells together form a network covering a city or region.

The cell concept depends on frequency reuse. The same radio frequency can be used in geographically distant cells, allowing the network to serve more users without increasing the assigned spectrum.

Equipment components

A cell site typically comprises a tower or building rooftop with mounted antennas, a base station that processes signals, cabling or fiber connections for backhaul to the core network, and a power system with batteries or diesel generators. Cooling and climate control systems are also standard.

How it works

A phone continuously listens for signals from nearby cells and selects the strongest. When moving, the network switches the connection from one cell to another in a process called handover. Transmission power is adjusted to minimize interference and battery drain.
