City

A city is a populated area where large numbers of people live in close proximity to one another. Most inhabitants work in occupations not directly tied to agriculture. Cities are distinguished from rural areas by their population density, concentration of settlement, and the presence of specialized services such as markets, schools, hospitals, and administrative centers.

The Somali term magaalo is applied to settlements of varying sizes, ranging from a district center to a capital city. There is no single internationally agreed numerical definition; each country sets its own population thresholds and administrative criteria for designating a place as a city.

General characteristics

Cities typically have a central business district, surrounding residential neighborhoods, and an interconnected network of roads. The urban economy depends mainly on commerce, industry, services, and administration. High population density creates demand for organized provision of services including water, electricity, sanitation, and public transportation.

Administration

Many cities have their own local government, known as city administration or city council, responsible for public services, land planning, and local taxation. The powers of such administrations and the method of their selection—whether by election or appointment—vary by country.

Growth and challenges

City growth is driven by natural increase, rural-to-urban migration, and expansion of administrative boundaries. Rapid unplanned growth can lead to informal settlements, traffic congestion, and strain on water and sanitation infrastructure. Urban planning attempts to balance residential areas, employment, and open space.
