Computer engineering is a field of engineering concerned with the design, construction, and testing of computer systems. It combines two disciplines: electrical and electronic engineering, which deals with hardware, and computer science, which deals with algorithms and software.
The core task is to design systems in which hardware and software are planned together. For example, when designing a new processor, the engineer considers computational power, electrical consumption, heat dissipation, and manufacturing cost. Similarly, low-level software such as drivers and firmware must be written to make the hardware function.
Brief history
The field emerged from electrical engineering in the twentieth century when electronic computers were built. The invention of the transistor and subsequently integrated circuits enabled computer hardware to become much smaller. Many universities then established dedicated programs in computer engineering, since traditional electrical engineering courses no longer met the new demand.
Major branches
These include the design of digital logic and circuits; computer architecture, which concerns how processor and memory components are organized; embedded systems, comprising small computers found in automobiles, mobile devices, and medical equipment; networks and data communication; and VLSI, the technology for manufacturing chips containing large numbers of transistors.
Education and employment
Undergraduate programs typically begin with advanced mathematics, physics, and programming, then progress to specialized courses such as signal processing, operating systems, and chip design. Graduates work in semiconductor manufacturing plants, telecommunications companies, electronics manufacturing, and research. In some contexts the work overlaps closely with software engineering, as tasks from both disciplines intersect.
