Entertainment (also called amusement) is a general term for activities whose main purpose is to provide people with enjoyment, pleasure, or leisure time. It includes the performing arts, music, stories, games, film, television programmes, and online video content.
Entertainment has two dimensions: a social dimension, consisting of cultural practice and public participation; and a commercial dimension, involving enterprises with employees, markets, and revenue streams. Some forms are skilled work for which admission is charged, while others are community activities that generate no income.
Major categories
Performing arts consist of narrative, theatre, film, and dance. Music includes songs, instrumental performance, and live concerts. Sports, particularly football, are among the forms that most commonly draw public audiences. Computer and mobile games, literature, and radio broadcasts also exist as forms of entertainment.
Media and technology
The means by which entertainment reaches people have changed significantly over time. Originally it was confined to live venues: theatres, ceremonies, and public gatherings. Later came print media, radio, cinema, and television. Today, the internet and streaming services have become the dominant channels, enabling individuals to produce and broadcast entertainment without requiring large corporate resources.
Economics and employment
Entertainment industries employ performers, artists, writers, directors, technicians for sound and image, and production managers. Revenue comes from ticket sales, sponsorship, subscription fees for online services, and copyrights. Copyright remains a contested issue, as the ease of digital copying affects the income of producers.
Entertainment and Somali society
Somali society has a long tradition of poetry and music. Poetry recitation, oral narrative, folk songs, and theatrical stories have for many generations been part of public amusement and cultural education. In recent years, online video content and short-form digital entertainment have played a significant role, particularly among youth and diaspora communities.
