In physiology and medicine, erogenous zones are areas of the human body that are highly sensitive to touch and whose stimulation can produce pleasure or sexual arousal. These areas contain a large number of nerve receptors located in the skin or mucous membranes, which transmit signals to the spinal cord and brain.

These zones are not uniform across all people. Sensitivity varies by individual, psychological state, age, and health of the person experiencing the sensation. The same area may also produce different sensations depending on the circumstances.

Anatomical basis

The skin contains various types of nerve receptors, some sensitive to pressure, some to light touch, and some to temperature or pain. Areas rich in nerve endings generally have a higher concentration of receptors, while other parts of the body have fewer. For this reason, light stimulation of these areas produces a more intense sensation than similar stimulation applied to the back or arms.

Commonly identified areas

Medical literature typically lists reproductive organs, the lower abdomen and lower belly, the oral cavity, tongue, ears, neck, and soles of the feet. Areas where the skin is thinner, such as the inner arms and inner thighs, are also generally sensitive. Individual variation remains the most important factor.
