A floor is the lower surface of a room or building on which people walk and objects are placed. It is one of three fundamental structural components of a room, along with walls and ceiling. The floor bears the weight of people, household furnishings, and equipment, and transfers this load to the building's support structures such as beams, load-bearing walls, and foundations.
The term 'floor' is also used to refer to any level in a building—for example, 'second floor' refers to the second level. The meaning thus depends on context: it can denote either the walking surface itself or a level of the building as a whole.
Components of a building floor
A floor typically consists of two distinct layers. The lower, rigid layer (concrete, boards, or tiles) carries the structural load. The upper, visible layer, known as the surface or finish, provides appearance, cleanliness, and comfort. Between these, other layers may be inserted to provide sound insulation, control heat transfer, or reduce reverberation.
Flooring materials
Common materials include concrete, stone, natural rock (marble and granite), tiles, carpet, and synthetic chemical products such as vinyl and laminate. Selection depends on cost, durability, ease of cleaning, and the function of the space; for example, kitchens and bathrooms typically use water-resistant materials.
Practical considerations and safety
A safe floor should not be slippery when wet, should not have excessive gloss, and should lack unexpected level changes that could cause people to trip. Building codes in many countries set standards for load-bearing capacity, fire resistance, and accessibility for people with disabilities—such as requiring ramps or level surfaces instead of steps.
