Gas giants are a class of planet that are extremely large and composed mainly of gas—specifically hydrogen and helium—rather than rock or solid metal. These planets have no solid surface to stand on; instead, pressure and temperature increase gradually as one moves inward, and the gas transitions into liquid and other states.

Within our solar system, Jupiter and Saturn are recognized as typical gas giants. Uranus and Neptune are also gas giants, though they are commonly known as "ice giants" because they contain a significant amount of dense materials such as water, ammonia, and methane in a liquid or solid state.

Structure

Gas giants have a thick atmospheric layer that deepens toward the interior. Below the surface, the hydrogen can transition into a metallic state that conducts electricity. The center is thought to contain a core of heavy elements, though its size and composition remain a matter of scientific debate.

Common characteristics

These planets typically feature: extremely high density relative to their size; rapid rotation around their axis, which produces a flattened shape; powerful winds creating distinct colored bands in the atmosphere; and numerous moons. Both Jupiter and Saturn have ring systems, though Saturn's is far more prominent.

Formation

The prevailing theory states that gas giants form far from their star, where temperatures allow ice to accumulate and form a core large enough to draw in substantial amounts of gas from the surrounding disk. This process is known as core accretion.

Extrasolar gas giants

Most of the planets discovered around other stars that were detected early on were gas giants, because their large size makes them easier to observe. Some of these are extremely close to their star and are called "hot Jupiters."
