Gibe River

The Gibe River is located in southwestern Ethiopia. It originates in the western highlands of the Rift Valley basin and flows southward. Gibe is one of the largest tributaries feeding the Omo River system, which eventually flows into Lake Turkana.

The name Gibe is also used for the upper section of this drainage system. When Gibe and other tributaries converge, the combined watercourse continues south as the Omo until reaching the lowlands. Some sources therefore refer to Gibe as the upper Omo.

Geography

The river flows through mountainous terrain with deep gorges and numerous narrow valleys. Water flow is heavily dependent on rainfall patterns: during the rainy season (typically mid to late summer), discharge increases substantially, while in the dry season it decreases. Agriculture in the surrounding area depends on these waters and the vegetation they support.

Water and hydropower use

The Gibe–Omo basin has been used by the Ethiopian government for hydroelectric projects. The Gilgel Gibe series and Gibe projects are among the country's major power sources. These projects feature reservoirs that store seasonal rainfall and discharge it through turbines to generate electricity.

Local and community disputes

The hydroelectric projects in this basin have generated dispute between the government, local organizations, and populations living downstream. The dispute centers on impacts of changes to seasonal water flow—affecting rainfed agriculture on which downstream communities depend—and on Lake Turkana water levels in Kenya. The government has argued that the reservoirs control dangerous flooding and provide both electricity and water supply.

Administration

The Gibe basin spans multiple administrative regions in southwestern Ethiopia, including Oromia region and southern districts. Water and power management falls under federal authorities responsible for water and energy.
