Group 1

Group 1 is a designation used to refer to the first section when many items are divided into groups. The name itself has no inherent meaning; its significance depends on the system it belongs to—a sports tournament, an educational scheme, a scientific classification, or an administrative list.

Because numbering typically begins at 1, Group 1 is usually recorded as the first on a list. This does not necessarily mean it is superior to or ranks higher than other groups, unless the rules of the system explicitly state otherwise.

Use in sports tournaments

In sports tournaments where many teams participate, teams are divided into groups to reduce the number of matches. Each team plays only against other teams in its group, and the highest-ranking teams then advance to the next round. Group 1 is the first section in this system and is typically filled through a predetermined draw.

Use in scientific classification

In chemistry, the periodic table of elements is divided into columns called groups. Group 1 can consist of elements sharing the same chemical properties and electron configuration. Other classification systems—such as hazard categories or product classifications—use similar nomenclature.

Name overlap

Because the name is generic, the same designation exists in many different contexts. Therefore, when used, it is best to specify the system it belongs to—for example: Group 1 in a football tournament, or Group 1 in the periodic table.
