Lake Kyoga is a freshwater lake located in central Uganda. It is extremely shallow—its depth is generally only a few meters—and is filled with water plants and papyrus swamps. Its shape is highly irregular, as the water has entered former river valleys, creating long extensions with branches on either side.

Kyoga is part of the Nile system. The White Nile, which flows out of Lake Victoria, enters Kyoga, after which the water continues westward and passes into Lake Albert, where it is named the Albert Nile. Kyoga is therefore an intermediate stage through which the White Nile passes.

Geography and structure

Kyoga has no distinct shoreline; instead, there is a broad zone of swamp and papyrus that separates the open water from dry land. In many places the open water and swamp merge, so the lake boundary shifts with rainfall. It is connected to several smaller lakes, such as Kwania and Bisina, which are sometimes considered part of the Kyoga system.

Aquatic life and fisheries

Nile perch and tilapia are important for commercial and subsistence fishing among the communities living on the shore. These communities use small boats and nets. The lake and its swamps are also home to many bird species and aquatic animals such as crocodiles and hippopotamuses in some areas.

Management challenges

Agricultural production and human activity in the surrounding area likewise affect water quality.
