List of World Members

List of World Members is a Somali term referring to a roster of states or bodies holding membership in a global organization. The most common usage refers to the list of states that are members of the United Nations (UN), designating those officially recognized as members of that body.

Such lists are not geographic rosters of all territories on Earth. They follow a formal legal procedure: a country submits an application, the Security Council makes a recommendation, and then the General Assembly makes a decision. As a result, there exist territories and administrations not on the list, even though they have populations and sub-state governance structures.

Membership in the United Nations

The United Nations began in the 1940s with a small number of states. Membership expanded significantly during the period of decolonization, particularly as African and Asian states gained independence. Membership grants a country the right to participate in the General Assembly, where each state holds one vote, and the right to seek seats on other councils.

Entities outside the list

There exist territories and entities with de facto power that lack formal membership. Some hold the status of observer, which allows them to participate in meetings without voting rights. Others do not appear on any list at all, due to disputes over international recognition or opposition from member states with veto power.

Uses of the membership list

The membership roster serves as a basis for many calculations: distribution of aid, international statistics, and country comparisons. It also affects policy, since inclusion or removal from the list is a question that blends legal and political considerations, not merely a technical matter.
