A mobile phone is a small, portable communication device that sends and receives calls and data over radio networks. The device is not connected by wire; instead it communicates with base stations over the air on two-way frequencies.

The system is called cellular because the coverage area is divided into units known as cells, each served by a base station. When a user moves, the call is transferred to another base station seamlessly—a process known as handover.

Technical architecture

A mobile phone comprises a transceiver radio, antenna, processor, memory, display, and rechargeable battery. Standard networks use SIM (subscriber identity module) cards that store the subscriber's number and security keys. Some newer models use software-based SIM (eSIM).

In many areas lacking traditional telephone infrastructure, the mobile phone has become the primary means of communication. Mobile money services have enabled people without bank accounts to send and receive funds. Concerns have also been raised about data privacy and excessive use.
