Muuse

Muuse is a common male name among Somali communities and Muslim populations of the Horn of Africa generally. It is the Somali form of the Arabic name Musa (موسى), which is the name of a prophet mentioned in the Qur'an. The spelling of the name varies: Muuse, Muusa, and English renderings such as Muse or Mussa.

The name functions in two ways: as a given name for an individual, and as a patronymic or ancestral name forming part of the three-part naming convention typical among Somalis (given name, father's name, grandfather's name). For this reason, Muuse can appear in any of these positions.

Etymology and meaning

The name Musa originally derives from Hebrew Mōšeh, which itself is understood to relate to ancient Egypt. It entered Somali through Arabic and Islam, then took on pronunciation and spelling adapted to Somali phonology, characteristically with a long vowel (uu) written as two letters.
