November is the eleventh month of the Gregorian calendar (the internationally used calendar). It has 30 days. It comes after October and before December.
The name 'November' derives from the Latin word 'november', based on 'novem' meaning nine. This is because the old Roman calendar began in March, making November the ninth month. When an extra month was added to the calendar, the name remained unchanged despite the shift in position.
Climate and seasons
In the Northern Hemisphere, November is part of late autumn or the beginning of winter; days grow shorter and temperatures fall. In the Southern Hemisphere, it corresponds to late spring approaching summer. In regions near the equator, such as Somalia, the division of seasons is based on rainfall; November generally marks the transition into the Deyr (winter rains) season.
Position in the year
November always begins on the same day of the week as March, except in leap years (366-day years). The month has no 31st day, making it one of four months with 30 days, along with April, June, and September.
Observances
Many countries observe commemorative occasions in November, notably commemorations of world wars on 11 November. Additionally, various national elections in different countries fall in this month.
