A road (also called jid or waddo) is a land route constructed to allow passage for people, livestock, and vehicles. Roads connect houses, villages, towns, and countries. They form part of the critical economic infrastructure, as they are used to transport goods, people, and services.
Roads vary in size, construction, and function. Some are simple unpaved tracks through a village, while others are wide, multi-lane highways with traffic moving in both directions. Roads are typically built and maintained by government agencies—transport ministries, regional authorities, or lower-level administrations—though in some cases private companies undertake construction under agreement.
Components of roads
A standard road consists of several layers. The subgrade is the prepared and compacted earth underneath. Above it is placed a layer of broken stone to distribute load. Finally, a surface layer of asphalt or concrete is applied. Modern roads also include drainage systems, road markings, and sidewalks for pedestrians.
Classification by grade
Many countries classify roads by grade. Long national roads connect major cities, followed by regional and local roads. Major roads built to specific standards—highways or motorways—typically have multiple lanes, controlled access, and high-speed sections. Within cities, roads are differentiated by the volume of traffic they carry and their role in the neighborhood.
Brief history
Early societies used footpaths and trade routes along which camels and donkeys were herded. The Roman Empire became famous for building stone roads that connected regions, some of which still exist today. The introduction of motor vehicles in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries led to roads being surfaced with asphalt and widened, which changed how cities developed.
Safety and maintenance
Roads are linked to vehicle accidents, which depend heavily on speed, pavement condition, lighting, and driver behavior. Preventive measures include road markings, speed management, footpath separation, and regular maintenance. Rain, flooding, and heavy traffic wear the surface, making ongoing maintenance necessary for roads to function.
