Solar power electricity is power generated from sunlight. The most widely used method is photovoltaic (PV) technology—panels made from semiconductor material that converts light directly into electricity. Another approach is concentrated solar power, which uses mirrors to collect and concentrate sunlight to heat a fluid, and the heat then drives a turbine.

A typical PV system consists of panels, an inverter that converts direct current (DC) into alternating current (AC) for household use, wiring, and sometimes a battery for storage. Grid-connected systems can feed excess power back to the national network; off-grid systems rely on batteries.

How it works

A PV cell is mostly made of silicon doped with other materials to create two different regions (n and p). When photons from sunlight strike the cell, they displace electrons, generating current. A single cell produces low voltage, so many cells are connected together to form a panel; multiple panels form an array.

Efficiency and factors affecting it

Output depends on light intensity, the angle and tilt of the panel, shading, dust, and temperature. Very high heat reduces panel efficiency. Output also varies by time of day and season, creating a need for storage or other backup supply.
