Somali Premier League

The Somali Premier League is Somalia's top-tier football competition. It is administered by the Somali Football Federation, which is a member of CAF (the Confederation of African Football) and FIFA. The winning team is eligible to participate in continental tournaments, provided that eligibility requirements are met.

Matches are mostly held in Mogadishu, particularly at the capital's stadiums, which means most clubs are based in the city. Due to security conditions and limited facilities, the competition schedule has been disrupted at various times, and its starting date varies from year to year.

Format of competition

The competition follows a league format: each team plays all other teams, with points awarded for results (win, draw, loss). In some years, teams have been divided into groups followed by playoff rounds, the structure depending on the number of registered clubs. There is also a separate cup competition distinct from the league.

Notable clubs

Clubs with a long history in the competition include Horseed, Elman, Dekedda, Heegan, Gaadiidka, and Banaadir Sports Club. Some of these clubs have been historically associated with government bodies or security sectors, as was common in football competitions in many African countries.

Administrative challenges

For an extended period, the civil conflict disrupted the regular operation of the competition; in some years matches did not take place at all. There were also administrative disputes concerning the federation's leadership, which occasionally required intervention by CAF and FIFA. In recent years, the renovation of stadiums and the resumption of international matches within the country have contributed to the development of the competition.
