Technology is the application of knowledge and skill to create tools, methods, and systems that make work easier. It includes tangible items such as machines and computers, as well as intangible systems such as computer software and work management frameworks.
The term originates from ancient Greek: 'tekhne', meaning craft or skill, and 'logia', meaning knowledge. Together they refer to the study and use of techniques. Today the term is commonly used to describe modern electronic devices, but its meaning extends more broadly.
Brief history
The beginnings of technology are traced to stone tools made by early humans and the use of fire. These were followed by agriculture, the construction of cities, metals, and pottery. In later centuries, the steam engine, electricity, and motorized vehicles transformed how goods were produced. The twentieth century saw the emergence of electronic computers and subsequently the global communication networks that connect the world.
Fields
Technology can be divided into many fields. These include information and communication technology, which concerns data storage and transmission; medical technology, including diagnostic equipment and medicines; energy technology, covering the generation and storage of electricity; and agricultural and automotive technology. Each field rests on fundamental science, but differs in its practical purpose and application.
Impact on society
Technology changes how work is organized, how information is shared, and how power is distributed. New tools may make services easier to access, while others may exclude people if they lack the cost or skills required. This disparity is often called the digital divide. Additionally, the use of these tools can affect the environment, for example through electronic waste and energy consumption.
Regulation and policy
Governments and international organizations establish rules concerning equipment safety, personal data protection, and market competition. Recurring questions include who owns information, how to evaluate the risks of new technologies, and how to balance innovation with consumer protection.
