Waax

Waax is a Somali term for a specific division or department within an institution, ministry, company or organization. A waax has defined functions, dedicated staff, and a manager known as the head or director of the department. Examples include the finance department, the human resources department, and the research department.

The plural form is waaxyo or waaxaha. The term is also used in education, where some universities refer to their teaching divisions as waax, such as the social sciences department. In some administrative contexts, a waax is smaller than a ministry but larger than a single office.

Administrative use

In the formal structure of institutions, a waax functions as a unit that divides labor. The purpose of this division is to assign each task to a dedicated area: planning, accounting, transport, or public relations. A waax reports to a higher level—typically the secretary general, director general or chairperson—and receives a budget and an authorized staffing complement.

Other uses

The term waax is also used more broadly to mean a part or aspect of something larger, such as a component of a task or a topic. This general usage is less strictly defined than the administrative sense.
