An aircraft is a vehicle that flies through the air and is heavier than air, generating lift through rigid wings that do not bend when moving through the air. The wings are propelled by engines—piston engines with propellers facing forward, or jet engines. They vary in size, from small single-seat aircraft to large transport and passenger planes carrying hundreds of people.

An aircraft operates under four balanced forces: lift, weight, thrust, and drag. When forward thrust exceeds drag, airspeed increases; when lift exceeds weight, the aircraft climbs. The pilot controls direction using control surfaces on the wings and tail.

Major Components

The fuselage is the central body that carries passengers, cargo, and the flight crew. The wings provide lift and typically house the fuel. The tail consists of a vertical fin and a horizontal stabilizer that control pitch and direction. The landing gear—wheels and shock-absorbing components—supports the aircraft when it is on the ground or landing.

Flight Control

Three basic motions exist: roll, controlled by surfaces on the wings; pitch, controlled by the horizontal stabilizer on the tail; and yaw, controlled by the vertical fin. On long flights, automatic systems typically handle most control while the pilot monitors.

Brief History

Aircraft development was based on extended experimentation with wings and aerodynamics. By the early twentieth century, controllable powered flight was achieved. The world wars accelerated engine and construction technology. In the second half of the twentieth century, jet engines enabled long-range, high-altitude, and fast aircraft, making the aeroplane the dominant mode of long-distance travel.

Uses and Safety

Aircraft are classified as passenger, cargo, training, agricultural, and military types. National and international bodies establish standards for pilot certification, aircraft maintenance, and flight tracking. Aircraft undergo rigorous technical inspection, and findings result in regulatory changes and design improvements.
