The Americas are the landmass situated between the Pacific Ocean to the east and the Atlantic Ocean to the west, comprising North America and South America. Many geographers include Central America and the Caribbean islands as part of North America, while other divisions treat them as independent regions.

The two continents are connected by the Isthmus of Panama. The land extends from the Arctic region in the north to the Antarctic coast in the south, resulting in all climate types: ice, tropical rainforest, desert, and high mountains.

Geography

The largest mountain ranges are located on the western side: the Rocky Mountains in the north and the Andes in the south, which are among the highest mountains by elevation. The central region contains vast plains and river valleys. The Amazon River in South America carries more water to the ocean than any other; the Mississippi-Missouri system is a major river network of North America.

History

The earliest inhabitants came from Asia, crossing the Bering region thousands of years ago. They established societies and states including the Maya, Aztec, and Inca, which built cities, agricultural systems, and developed mathematics and calendars. Following Christopher Columbus's voyages in 1492, European monarchies—particularly Spain, Portugal, England, and France—began colonization and conquest. Diseases introduced and warfare significantly reduced indigenous populations.

People and languages

Today the most widely spoken languages are Spanish, English, and Portuguese, all brought by colonizers. Many indigenous languages remain in use, including Quechua, Guaraní, Nahuatl, and Aymara. The population descends from indigenous peoples, Europeans, Africans brought as slaves, and Asian immigrants.

Economy and politics

There are over thirty independent states and several territories governed by other nations. Economic variation is significant: the United States and Canada have the world's largest economies, while other countries depend primarily on agriculture and mining. Regional organizations include the Organization of American States (OAS), Mercosur, and CARICOM.

NoteNote: In Somali and other languages, the term "Americas" sometimes refers only to the United States. Here it refers to both continents.
