An automobile (also called a vehicle or car) is a motor-powered vehicle typically with four wheels that travels on roads. It is designed to transport a small number of people and light cargo. It differs from trains and aircraft in that the driver controls direction and movement directly, and it travels on open roads shared with other traffic.

An automobile's system consists of several interconnected parts: the engine, which produces power; the transmission (gearbox), which transfers power to the wheels; the steering mechanism, which changes direction; the brakes, which reduce speed; and the chassis and body, which carry passengers and other components. Power can come from fuel (petrol or diesel), electricity (battery), or a combination of both.

History

The first motor-powered automobiles emerged in Europe in the late 19th century, when German engineers developed the internal combustion engine burning fuel. In the early 20th century, the introduction of assembly line manufacturing in the United States lowered costs, making automobiles affordable to many people. Subsequently, automobile factories in the United States, Europe, Japan, South Korea, and later China became major forces in the global economy.

Types

Automobiles are classified by shape and purpose: sedans (four-door with a separate trunk), hatchbacks (with a rear door that opens upward), SUVs and 4x4s (high-clearance vehicles capable of rough terrain), and pickups (with an open cargo bed). They are also classified by power source: petrol vehicles, electric vehicles (EV), and hybrids combining petrol and electric engines.

Impact on society and environment

The automobile transformed urban planning: cities developed wider roads, parking areas, and sprawling suburbs away from city centers. However, it created problems: road accidents causing injury and death, traffic congestion, noise pollution, and exhaust emissions damaging air quality and contributing to climate change. Many countries have enacted regulations controlling emissions and promoted electric and public transportation vehicles.
