Aviation is the set of activities related to the design, manufacture, and operation of aircraft heavier than air, such as fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters. It includes supporting systems: airports, air traffic control, maintenance, and safety regulations.
The basic principle is that when air flows over a wing, it creates pressure differences that generate upward force (lift). The engine provides thrust to overcome air resistance (drag), while the aircraft's weight pulls downward. The balance of these four forces determines climb, level flight, and descent.
Brief history
Before the twentieth century, people used hot-air balloons and unpowered gliders. In 1903, the American Wright brothers accomplished the first controlled powered flight, marked as a historic milestone. The world wars accelerated engine and aircraft development, while jet propulsion in the mid-twentieth century brought fast aircraft capable of carrying more passengers.
Sectors
Aviation is generally divided into civil and military sectors. Civil aviation comprises commercial transport (passengers and cargo) and general aviation (small operators, flight training, and private use). The military sector uses combat aircraft, transport, and reconnaissance. In recent years, unmanned aircraft (drones) have become a growing segment in both sectors.
Management and safety
International aviation is governed by interstate agreements and organizations. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), a United Nations agency, sets standards for safety, communications, and aerodrome recognition. Each country has a national aviation authority that issues licenses and oversees airlines. Accident investigations examine technical and human factors, with the goal of improvement rather than solely assigning blame.
Environment and economy
Aircraft use petroleum fuel and emit carbon dioxide and other pollutants, making this sector part of climate change debates. Measures under study include alternative fuels (SAF), electric engines, and fuel-efficient designs. Economically, aviation depends on markets for luxury travel and high-value cargo, and provides many supporting jobs.
