The bat (scientific name: Chiroptera) is a group of mammals and the only mammals capable of true flight—that is, they propel themselves through the air using their wings, rather than simply gliding from one place to another. The wing is made of a thin membrane stretched across elongated finger bones. The term Chiroptera means "hand-wing."
Bats inhabit nearly all continents except the coldest regions. Most are nocturnal creatures that rest during the day in caves, trees, rock crevices, and buildings. There are thousands of species, making them one of the most diverse groups of mammals.
Body and flight
A bat's wing is not feathered like a bird's wing; it is a double-layered membrane attached to the fingers, sides of the body, and usually the legs. This gives them fine control, allowing them to reshape the wing while flying and thus navigate narrow spaces. Their feet have clawed toes that allow them to hang upside down while using minimal effort.
Echolocation
Many bat species use echolocation: they emit high-frequency sounds that humans typically cannot hear, then listen to the echoes bouncing back from objects. By measuring the time between sound and echo, they estimate distance, size, and movement of prey. In this way they navigate and hunt at night. Many fruit-eating species, especially large ones that feed on flowers, rely more on sight and smell than on echolocation.
Diet and ecological role
Diet varies widely: insects, fruit, nectar, fish, and small blood-feeding species found in parts of Central and South America. Insect-eating bats reduce pest populations in agricultural areas. Nectar-feeding bats pollinate many flowers, and fruit-eating bats disperse seeds throughout forests.
Reproduction and lifespan
Compared with other mammals of similar size, bats produce few young—typically one offspring per year—but they are relatively long-lived. Pups are nursed by the mother and usually live together in colonies that can number many individuals. Such colonies aid in thermoregulation and offspring care.
Bats and humans
Bats can carry certain diseases transmissible to other animals and humans, such as rabies in some species. Public health guidance warns against handling dead bats. On the other hand, their colonies pose risks to buildings, cave systems, and disease spread; many countries have enacted legal protections for certain bat species.
