A belt (mechanical) is a cord or band stretched around a set of rotating pulleys, used to transfer power from one part of a machine to another. As one pulley rotates, the belt transmits rotation and torque to the other pulleys.
Belts are used in factory machinery, vehicle engines, elevators, and farming equipment. Among their advantages is the ability to bridge large distances between two shafts without requiring a rigid support like a gearbox. They also run quietly and act as a safety mechanism: if excessive load is applied, the belt may slip or break rather than damage the motor.
How It Works
A belt's operation depends on friction between its surface and the pulley rim, except for toothed belts that work through mechanical engagement. The power that can be transmitted depends on belt tension when loaded, the angle at which the belt contacts the pulley, and the materials used. When pulleys differ in size, a speed change occurs: the smaller pulley rotates faster than the larger one, with the speed ratio determined by the difference in diameter.
Types
The flat belt is the oldest type used, with a smooth surface. The V-belt has a triangular profile that sits in a groove on the pulley rim, increasing friction; it is the most common type in motors and factories. The timing belt has teeth on its inner surface that fit into grooves on the pulley, ensuring synchronisation without slipping—for example, a vehicle engine's timing belt. There are also serpentine belts with small V-grooves, with one belt driving multiple components.
Materials and Maintenance
Modern belts are typically made of rubber or polymer, reinforced with strong cord made of polyester, nylon, or other fibre to reduce stretching. Over time, belts wear, crack, and lose their strength. Maintenance includes checking tension, aligning pulleys, and replacing the belt before it breaks—especially important for timing belts, whose failure can damage engine components.
