Black (also Madaw or Madow) is the color perceived when light from an object or surface fails to reach the eye. When the surface of an object absorbs most of the light that falls upon it and reflects very little, the eye perceives black. Nevertheless, light scientists debate whether black is truly a color in the same sense as red or blue; rather, it represents the absence of light.
Color mixing is classified into two systems. When light mixes (the additive model, as in screens), black is the absence of all wavelengths—the point at which no light is emitted. When pigments are mixed (the subtractive model used in painting and printing), black can be achieved by combining primary colors, though modern printing employs a dedicated black pigment to achieve deep and accurate black more reliably.
Scientific basis
Black objects have a high capacity to absorb visible light wavelengths. For example, carbon in its graphite form absorbs considerable light, which is why it appears black. Because the absorbed light energy converts to heat, black objects heat up faster in sunlight than light-colored ones, which reflect light.
Use and cultural meaning
Different societies have assigned varied meanings to black. In much of Europe, it is associated with mourning and death, whereas in other places it signifies formality, solemnity, or power. Black clothing is widely worn for formal work, office settings, and formal occasions, as it does not show dirt and coordinates easily with other colors.
Art and printing
In drawing and painting, black plays a major role in rendering depth and tone. Early photography, known as black-and-white photography, relied on the contrast between black and white to build images. In the printing of books and documents, black is the standard color for text, as it appears most legible when printed on white paper.
