A bridge is a structure built to span an obstacle such as a river, valley, coastal water, or road. It carries foot traffic, vehicles, trains, or even water and pipes. Its primary function is to transfer the load above it to support structures on both sides and central piers.
Bridge design depends on the distance to be spanned, the expected load, the type of soil for the foundation, and available materials. Engineers calculate two types of load: dead load (the weight of the structure itself) and live load (from vehicles, wind, and earthquakes).
Main Components
Most bridges consist of a foundation extending into the ground, piers supporting the middle section, abutments anchoring the sides to the earth, and a deck or roadway on top for traffic. Large bridges often use steel cables or beams to distribute the load.
Types
The simplest form is the beam bridge, a straight span resting on two supports, suitable for short distances. The arch bridge transfers load to the sides by using the arch's curve. The suspension bridge hangs the deck from large cables supported by two tall towers, allowing the longest spans. The cable-stayed bridge runs cables directly from the tower. There are also pontoon bridges (floating) and movable bridges that open for ship traffic.
Materials and History
Early bridges were made from logs or stones laid together. The Roman Empire was famous for stone arch bridges, some still standing. In the 18th and 19th centuries, iron and steel enabled much longer spans, including railways. Today, reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete are most common.
Maintenance and Hazards
Bridges face damage from corrosion, scour (water erosion at pier bases), ground movement, and loads exceeding design capacity. They require regular inspection, repair, and load restrictions. Wind has a major effect on suspension bridges, so they are tested using wind tunnel models.
