Chromium (English: Chromium, symbol: Cr) is a chemical element with atomic number 24. It belongs to the transition metals, a group of hard substances that shine brightly when polished. It has a silvery color, high hardness, and a very high melting point.
The name comes from the Greek word 'chroma', meaning color, because its compounds display various colors: green, red, yellow, and blue. Chromium is used primarily in the production of stainless steel and in metal coating known as chrome plating.
Physical and chemical properties
Chromium is one of the hardest elements found in nature. When exposed to air, its surface forms a thin chromium oxide layer. This layer prevents the underlying metal from rusting. This is why stainless steel is valued: when chromium reaches a certain concentration, the entire metal gains protection against oxidation and corrosion. Chromium has multiple oxidation states, the most common being +3 and +6.
Sources
The principal ore from which chromium is extracted is chromite, a compound of chromium and iron or magnesium. Chromite is mined in countries including South Africa, Kazakhstan, Turkey, and India. Pure chromium does not occur naturally; it must be extracted from ore using thermal and chemical methods.
Uses
The largest portion of extracted chromium is used in steel manufacturing. It is also used for metal coating to produce a shiny, corrosion-resistant surface, as well as in dyes, refractory materials, and certain leather tanning processes.
Health and safety
Trivalent chromium (+3) is considered a trace nutrient that the body requires, while hexavalent chromium compounds (+6) are recognized as toxic and carcinogenic if inhaled or absorbed over prolonged periods. For this reason, many countries have restricted the use of hexavalent chromium in industrial and waste applications.
