A coastline is the area of land bordering the sea. It is the boundary between dry land and water, where waves, tides, and wind constantly reshape the terrain. The exact limits of a coastline cannot be defined by a single fixed line, because water levels rise and fall daily.
Coastlines vary in composition: rocky, sandy, muddy, and pebbly. Some are steep cliffs dropping into the sea, others are flat sandy beaches with regular gradients. This variety depends on the type of local rock, the force of waves, and the amount of sediment carried by rivers.
How coastlines form
Two processes shape coastlines. One is erosion: waves and tides wear away rock and soil, creating steep cliffs, caves, and isolated rocks standing in the sea. The other is deposition: water deposits sand and mud, creating extended beaches, sandy ridges, and islands linked to the mainland. Everywhere, these two processes compete, and the result is constantly changing.
Life and habitats
Coastal areas host abundant life. In areas covered by tides, there live creatures suited to exposure and concealment, such as crabs, mollusks, and small fish. In warm areas, mangrove forests and coral reefs grow, both reducing wave force and protecting nearby land. They are also fishing grounds.
Human uses
Much of the world's population lives on or near coastlines. Coasts provide commercial ports, fishing, salt production, and recreation. This use has brought heavy development to coastal areas, including harbors, ports, and hotels, which change how sand moves along the shore.
Challenges
Rising sea levels make coastal areas hazardous. Rapid erosion, storms, and saltwater flooding affecting farmland are issues governments with coastlines must manage. Various methods are used: building seawalls, replenishing eroded beaches with sand, and protecting mangrove forests.
