Copper is an element with the chemical symbol Cu. It has a distinctive reddish-brown color and is one of the few metals whose color is neither white nor silver. Copper is malleable and ductile, can be drawn into thin wire, and can be hammered into sheets.
Copper's most important property is its ability to conduct electricity and heat efficiently. For this reason it is used in electrical wiring, building fixtures, and water pipes. Copper is also alloyed with other metals to create alloys, including bronze (copper and tin) and brass (copper and zinc).
Physical and Chemical Properties
Copper is one of the transition metals in the periodic table. When exposed to air and moisture, its surface develops a green patina that protects the underlying metal from further corrosion—this can be seen on roofs and old statues. Copper does not dissolve easily in water, but it reacts with certain acids.
History of Use
Copper is one of the earliest metals used by humans, as it is sometimes found in relatively pure form in the ground. In ancient times, the combination of copper and tin produced bronze, which was used for weapons and agricultural tools. This period is what historians call the Bronze Age.
Production and Manufacturing
Copper is extracted from ore mined from the earth and then refined using heat and electrochemical processes. Major producing countries include Chile, Peru, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Copper is recyclable without loss of quality, making it a reusable resource.
Role in Life
Copper is a trace element essential to the human body; it plays a role in the function of certain enzymes and in blood formation. Excessive amounts are harmful. Some animals, such as the octopus and lobster, use copper in their blood instead of iron, which gives their blood a blue color.
