Drought is a climatic condition resulting from rainfall in a given area falling significantly below normal levels over an extended period. It differs from desert (a permanent arid state), since deserts are a constant climatic condition, whereas drought is a temporary departure from normal that can occur in any part of the world, even in areas of high rainfall.

The severity of drought is not determined by rainfall deficit alone. It depends on how prepared a community is: water storage capacity, the type of crops grown, livestock numbers in the area, and the government's ability to distribute water and food to people. Consequently, the same degree of rainfall shortage causes minor hardship in one place and catastrophe in another.

Types of drought

Climatologists distinguish several types of drought. Meteorological drought is a decline in rainfall. Agricultural drought occurs when soil moisture falls below what plants need. Hydrological drought happens when rivers, lakes, and groundwater levels drop. There is also socioeconomic drought, which occurs when water demand exceeds available supply.

Causes

Drought is often linked to ocean circulation patterns and sea temperature variations. A well-known example is El Niño and La Niña, which alter rainfall patterns across different regions of the Pacific basin. Other factors such as deforestation, excessive groundwater extraction, and rising global temperatures can also worsen drought conditions.

Impacts

When drought persists, crop yields fall, pasturelands shrink, and livestock die or lose market value. Pastoral herders migrate to areas with water, sometimes triggering conflict with settled populations. Food prices rise and child malnutrition increases. Large-scale internal migration within countries can also occur.

Early warning and management

Early warning systems use satellite imagery, rainfall measurement, and market information to forecast food insecurity before conditions worsen. Preventive measures include building wells and reservoirs, crop diversification for drought resistance, livestock health protection, and cash transfers to vulnerable households. Early preparedness is usually more effective than emergency response.
