An experiment is a scientific method of inquiry in which a researcher deliberately changes one or more variables (called independent variables) and then measures the resulting effects. The primary purpose is to test a hypothesis (whether it is true or false) by observing the relationship between a cause and an effect.
An experiment differs from simple observation. Observation records what occurs naturally, whereas an experiment creates a controlled condition. For this reason, experiments typically provide stronger evidence about causation, but they require true control in a way that is not always possible, especially in the social sciences.
Core Components
A standard experiment includes an independent variable—the factor that the researcher changes—and a dependent variable, which is what is measured. Other variables are controlled to prevent them from affecting the outcome. Often a test group receiving the intervention is compared with a control group that does not.
Control and Design
To reduce bias, randomization is used, ensuring that participants are assigned to groups by chance. Blinding—where participants or researchers do not know which group receives the intervention—prevents bias from affecting results. In experiments testing treatments on humans, known as clinical trials, a placebo is often used.
Replication and Validity
A single result cannot be relied upon. Science evaluates findings when other researchers repeat the experiment and obtain similar results. Statistical analysis determines whether observed differences came from the effect being tested or from chance. In recent years, the replication problem in psychology and medical research has become a major topic of debate.
Ethics and Limitations
Experiments on humans or animals are subject to ethical regulations. Informed consent, avoidance of harm, and oversight by independent review boards are required. In some fields, such as climate science or economics, true experimentation is not possible, so researchers rely on models or natural experiments.
