Falaga Yemen is the science of astronomy and the practice of timekeeping that originated in Yemen. It combines local knowledge based on observation of stars and weather with Arabic scholarly writings produced in the region's educational institutions.
The primary uses of this science were determining agricultural seasons, tracking sea currents and seasonal winds, and establishing religious times for prayer and lunar months. In this way, falaga Yemen was deeply woven into the calendar and daily life, not merely an academic pursuit.
Types and star observation
A system called 'anwaa'' was based on the rising and setting of particular stars to mark periods of the year. Stars and constellations were used to predict rain, drought, and planting times. This system existed throughout the Arabian Peninsula, but Yemen developed regional variations suited to its mountainous terrain and coasts.
Texts and instruments
During the medieval Yemeni dynasties, including the kingdoms that ruled Zabid, Taʿizz, and Sanʿaaʾ, scholars wrote treatises on time calculation (ʿilm al-mīqāt), agricultural calendars, and the use of instruments such as the astrolabe. Scholars relied on determining the qibla direction and prayer times for each city.
Connection to tradition and the present
Traditional astronomical knowledge still appears in the vocabulary of Yemeni farmers and fishermen. In the modern period, the study of falaga has been affected by the condition of universities and national security; recent conflicts have reduced scholarly research capacity and damaged handwritten documents preserved in library collections.
