Fly (also 'daqsi') is an insect belonging to the large group scientifically known as Diptera. The term Diptera comes from Greek and means 'two wings'. The most visible characteristic of these insects is that they have two wings for flight, while the hind wings have been modified into small structures called 'halteres', which function in stabilizing flight.
Diptera is one of the most numerous insect orders. It includes the house fly, mosquito, camel fly, and fruit fly (Drosophila), which is widely used in genetic research. Flies inhabit diverse environments worldwide, from deserts to cold regions.
Body structure
The fly body is divided into three parts: head, thorax, and abdomen. The head has two compound eyes made up of thousands of small units, which enable the detection of rapid movement. The fly's mouth varies by species: some have a proboscis for sucking (such as the house fly which feeds on liquids), while others have a tube-like mouth for piercing (such as the mosquito which feeds on blood).
Life cycle
Flies undergo complete metamorphosis in four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Larvae typically live in places rich in food—such as fruit, animal corpses, or stagnant water. The duration of the life cycle depends on species and environmental temperature; some species can take several weeks, while others develop more rapidly.
Health significance
Some Diptera species play a role in disease transmission. Mosquitoes can transmit diseases such as plague, dengue, and yellow fever. House flies have been shown to carry bacteria on their bodies and transfer them to food, which is linked to diarrheal diseases. Control measures include sanitation, food covers, screens on windows, and insecticides.
Ecological role
Flies perform important functions in ecosystems. Many species pollinate flowering plants, thereby supporting plant reproduction. Some larvae decompose dead organic matter, contributing to nutrient cycling. Flies also serve as food for birds, bats, and fish, forming part of the food chain.
