A forest (keyn, duur, or hawd) is a natural landscape dominated by large trees growing densely together, with branches and canopy blocking sunlight from reaching the ground. A forest is not merely a collection of trees; it is an ecological system in which trees, grass, animals, birds, insects, bacteria and fungi all live together, interdependent for food and shelter.

Forests develop in regions where rainfall and climate favor the growth of large trees. Consequently, the densest forests are typically found in equatorial regions and in cooler highland areas. In regions of low rainfall such as deserts and plains, widely scattered trees form open woodland (dhiro) that does not constitute a full forest.

Types of forest

Forests are classified according to climate and tree species. Tropical rainforests have high biodiversity and year-round rainfall. Deciduous forests in temperate climates shed their leaves during winter. Boreal forests in the north are dominated by coniferous trees such as birch and pine.

Structure

A mature forest typically has distinct layers: the canopy, formed by the tallest trees; the understory, composed of smaller trees and shrubs; and the floor, containing grass, soil organisms and decaying vegetation. Each layer supports its own animal life. Decomposers rely on dead and fallen trees as a source of nutrients for plants.

Ecological importance

Forests store carbon dioxide in wood, roots and soil, affecting global climate. They also reduce rainfall impact, regulate water flow, prevent soil erosion, which is essential for rivers and streams. Many people obtain timber, fuel, medicines from plants, fruits and other forest products.

Threats and management

The main threats to forests include tree felling for agricultural land or logging, mining, forest fires and climate change. When forests are cleared, wildlife loses habitat and soil becomes exposed. Conservation measures include reforestation, limiting tree felling, fire control and sustainable resource use involving local communities.
