Geography is the science that studies the Earth's surface, its natural features, and how people live in and use places. The discipline combines knowledge of the physical environment and human society, asking where things happen, why they happen there, and how places are connected to each other.
The term comes from ancient Greek, meaning "writing or drawing of the Earth". It is divided into two broad branches: physical geography and human geography. Cartography and geographic information systems (GIS) are the main tools of this science.
Physical Geography
This branch studies landforms (mountains, valleys, plains), climate, water, vegetation, and wildlife. It includes fields such as climatology, geomorphology, and hydrology. It explains how atmosphere, water, and earth interact with one another.
Human Geography
This branch examines the distribution of people, cities, economies, migration, and politics across places. Its subfields include cultural geography, urban geography, economic geography, and political geography. For example, it investigates why people migrate from rural areas to cities.
Methods and Tools
Geographers use maps, remote sensing imagery, and GIS systems to collect and analyze spatially referenced data. They also conduct fieldwork: measurements, interviews, and surveys of specific regions.
Applications
Geographic knowledge is applied to urban planning, management of water and land resources, disaster risk reduction such as for droughts and floods, and decision-making in government and business. It also provides a foundation for studying boundaries and international relations.
