How Did Life Begin?

The question of how life began is among the largest topics in biology and chemistry. The general view that scientists work with holds that early life emerged from chemical matter that was not alive, gradually transforming step by step into interconnected systems that interacted with one another. This process is called abiogenesis (life arising from non-living matter).

The Earth is estimated to be approximately 4.5 billion years old. The earliest signs taken to indicate life appear in very ancient rocks, with estimates ranging from 3.5 to 4 billion years ago. This means that life's beginning occurred in an early period of Earth's history, but the precise details of the process remain unconfirmed.

Basic building blocks

Life is built on chemical substances known as amino acids (which make up proteins), nucleotides (which make up DNA and RNA), and fatty lipids that form cell membranes. Experiments conducted in the twentieth century, most famously the Miller-Urey experiment of the 1950s, showed that amino acids can form on their own from gases and water when subjected to energy like lightning. This does not prove that it happened this way in reality, but it showed that these basic building blocks were not difficult to create.

The RNA world hypothesis

One of the most well-known theories is the RNA world. It proposes that RNA — a molecule similar to DNA but single-stranded — could simultaneously perform two functions: storing information and speeding up chemical reactions. Therefore, an RNA-based system likely preceded the modern system of DNA and proteins. The greatest difficulty with this theory is how complete RNA could have formed under natural conditions.

Where life began

There is debate about where life began. Some propose hydrothermal vents on the ocean floor, where chemical energy and minerals come together. Others point to small pools on the Earth's surface that regularly dried out and refilled, which could have helped molecules bond together. Another view, called panspermia, suggests that basic building blocks came from space and were delivered via asteroids and comets; however, this merely moves the question elsewhere.
