A microscope is an instrument used to examine objects too small for the human eye to distinguish unaided. The device uses optical lenses or electron beams to magnify the image of an object. It is used in biological research, medicine, chemistry, and industry.
The term 'sheybaar' is often used in Somali to refer to a laboratory or research facility in general, though many people also use it when speaking specifically about microscopic examination. The microscope is one of the essential instruments in a medical laboratory, particularly for blood analysis, urine testing, and tissue examination.
How it works
An optical microscope functions by passing or reflecting light through an object. The objective lens closest to the specimen magnifies the image, and then the eyepiece lens magnifies it a second time. Overall magnification is calculated by multiplying the magnification of the two lenses. Resolution—the instrument's ability to distinguish between two nearby points—is critical.
Types
Various types exist. A simple microscope uses a single lens, while a compound microscope uses several. The electron microscope replaces light with an electron beam, providing far greater magnifying power and resolution, allowing examination of cellular and viral structures. Other types include stereo microscopes, which provide three-dimensional images, and fluorescence microscopes, which use fluorescent dyes.
Brief history
Magnifying lenses have been known for a long time, but the compound microscope emerged in the 16th and 17th centuries in Europe, particularly in the Netherlands and Italy. Early scientists, such as Antonie van Leeuwenhoek, used lenses they ground themselves to examine microscopic life. The 20th century saw the invention of the electron microscope, which advanced the study of cells and viruses.
Present use
In medical laboratories, microscopes are used to diagnose diseases such as plague, cholera, and scabies through prepared and stained samples. In schools and universities, it is a basic teaching instrument. In industry and technology, it is used to verify the quality of metals, semiconductors, and other materials.
