Mite (also known as boodo or tagfi in Somali; Arabic: سوسة) is a general name for tiny spider-like organisms belonging to the class Arachnida, which also includes spiders and ticks. Most mite species are smaller than one millimeter, which is why many of them are not visible to the naked eye. Mites and ticks are classified together in a group called Acari.
Mites live in almost every terrestrial habitat: soil, trees, roofs, animal fur, bedding, and household dust. Some feed on dead organic matter and decay, while others live on plants or animals, feeding on blood or body fluids. As a result, mites play a role in terrestrial food webs, and some are associated with agricultural damage and health problems.
Body Structure
The mite body typically appears unsegmented and lacks the clear body divisions seen in insects. It has eight legs when fully grown, though the larval stage that emerges from the egg usually has six legs. Mites lack wings and do not have long tail-like appendages. The mouth region is called the gnathosoma, and is the part through which the mite feeds or pierces.
Life Cycle
The mite life cycle typically passes through distinct stages: egg, larva, nymph, and adult. Each stage involves moulting. The cycle's duration depends on temperature and humidity; in warm, humid conditions it can be completed in days, leading to rapid population growth.
Effects on Crops and Livestock
Plant-dwelling mite species feed on leaf fluids, causing leaves to wilt or curl. Those affecting livestock can cause skin disease and coat damage; in humans, the species Sarcoptes scabiei causes scabies. Control depends on sanitation, isolation of affected animals, and specific pesticides called acaricides.
House Dust Mites
House dust mites live in mattresses, bedding, and carpets, feeding on skin scales shed by humans. They do not bite, but their fecal matter is associated with triggering respiratory allergies and asthma in some people. Regular cleaning and humidity control indoors reduce their numbers.
