A mobile telephone (also called a mobile phone or cellphone) is a portable communication device that transmits voice calls and data over a radio network. Unlike a landline telephone, which connects through fixed wires, it connects to base stations distributed across different locations.
The network is divided into cells—the origin of the term 'cellular'. Each cell has a radio base station. When a user moves, the call is passed to the next cell in a process called handover, maintaining continuous connection.
How it works
A mobile telephone contains a small transmitter and receiver, an antenna, a battery, and a SIM card that identifies the user to the network. Voice and data are converted into digital signals and then encoded into radio waves. The base station transmits the data to the wider network, where it is routed to another user.
Technological generations
Early analog systems are known as the first generation (1G). The second generation (2G), which includes GSM, introduced digital transmission and text messaging (SMS). The 3G, 4G, and 5G generations have increased data speeds, enabling internet access, video calling, and other services.
Modern mobile phones
Modern mobile phones (smartphones) feature touchscreens, operating systems, cameras, and downloadable applications. This allows them to combine the functions of a telephone, computer, camera, and GPS navigation device.
Impact on society
In areas where fixed-line networks are limited, the mobile telephone has become the primary means of communication. Mobile-based financial services have also emerged, allowing users to send and receive money without access to a bank.
