Motivation is an internal process that drives a person's behavior, directs the course of their actions, and determines how long they will persist in a task. The term is also used to mean "giving confidence" or "instilling resolve," which occurs when one person's words, recognition, or support encourages another. In psychology, motivation is often defined along three dimensions: initiation of action, direction of action, and persistence in action.
Motivation cannot be observed directly; it is inferred from observable behavior—for example, task choice, effort expended, and persistence when obstacles arise. For this reason, researchers use indirect measures such as self-report questionnaires, time spent on tasks, and controlled experiments.
Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivation
The most common distinction is between intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation comes from the task itself: interest, enjoyment, or a sense of progress. Extrinsic motivation is tied to outcomes separate from the task: money, rewards, praise, or avoidance of punishment. The two can interact; some research has shown that external rewards under certain conditions can reduce intrinsic interest in a previously enjoyed task, an effect known as motivation crowding-out.
Major Theories
Need-based theories argue that behavior stems from the satisfaction of basic needs. A well-known example is Maslow's hierarchy of needs, which progresses from physiological needs to self-actualization. Self-determination theory identifies three psychological needs: autonomy, competence, and social relatedness. Expectancy-value theory explains motivation as a function of the expectation of success and the value placed on the outcome. Goal-setting theory suggests that specific, challenging goals generally produce higher performance than vague ones.
Biological Aspects
Brain systems involved in reward are part of motivation. Dopamine, a neurochemical, is associated with reward-seeking and learning predictable outcomes, rather than pleasure alone. Physiological states such as hunger, temperature, and sleep deprivation also alter the salience of behavior.
Applications in Education and Work
In education, teachers use immediate feedback, specific goals, and choice to increase student engagement. In the workplace, job design, recognition, and opportunities for advancement are commonly cited as factors affecting worker performance and retention. Research findings vary depending on the population studied, the type of task, and how the effect was measured.
