Platinum (symbol Pt) is a precious metal with a silvery-white color and high luster. It belongs to the platinum group metals, which also include palladium, rhodium, iridium, osmium, and ruthenium. It is notable for its high resistance to corrosion and ability to withstand high temperatures.
Platinum is extremely rare in the Earth's crust compared to common metals such as iron or copper. Because of this scarcity, its market price is high, and it is ranked among precious metals alongside gold and silver.
Physical and Chemical Properties
Platinum is a dense metal with a high melting point and exceptional resistance to corrosion. It is malleable and ductile, meaning it can be drawn into fine wire. Chemically it is highly stable: ordinary air and weak acids do not attack it readily, though it does dissolve in aqua regia (a mixture of hydrochloric and nitric acid). Its atomic number is 78.
Applications
The most widespread use is catalysis. Automobiles are equipped with catalytic converters containing platinum, which converts toxic gases from fuel exhaust into less harmful substances. It is also used in chemical manufacturing, hydrogen fuel cells, and laboratory equipment. In medicine, platinum compounds such as cisplatin are used to treat cancer, and platinum is used to make dental and surgical implants. In jewelry, platinum is used for rings and necklaces.

Platinum is typically extracted from ore deposits where it occurs alongside other platinum group metals, nickel, and copper. South Africa is among the world's largest producers, and significant quantities also come from Russia. A substantial portion of the market supply comes from recycling spent catalytic converters.
History
Indigenous peoples of South America used platinum before the arrival of Europeans. The name 'platina' comes from the Spanish word meaning 'little silver,' as it was originally regarded as an inferior metal mixed with gold. During the eighteenth century, European scientists began to study it systematically, and it was later recognized as a distinct element.
